HVAS COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT
Intermediate Beekeeping
(a biological approach)
This is an intensive intermediate course focusing on biological principles and knowledge of the honeybee and how they affect and influence beekeeping. A beekeeper who achieves an understanding of the biological principles upon completing this course will have a more thorough knowledge and a better basis for colony management rather than merely relying on memorized protocols.
A new segment on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will also be covered. IPM in honeybee culture addresses the growing resistance of bee parasites to traditional treatment methods. It draws on the biology of both the honeybee and the parasite and their interrelationship within the scope of colony management. It utilizes threshold levels within the colony facilitating treatment only when necessary. It is a more rational method to monitor the state of colony health and is an alternative to blanket chemical control.
